Don’t Let Your FSA Dollars Go to Waste!

Lake City, IA – As the year comes to a close, Stewart Memorial Community Hospital (SMCH) reminds individuals to maximize Flexible Spending Account (FSA) benefits. Any unused funds in FSAs will expire at the end of the year.

What is an FSA? An FSA allows individuals to set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible medical and dependent care expenses. By using an FSA, consumers can significantly reduce their taxable income and save money on out-of-pocket healthcare costs.

Why Use An FSA? FSAs are a “use it or lose it” benefit. This means any unused funds at the end of the year will be forfeited. Now is the time to use an FSA to pay for:

  • Dental costs: Routine check-ups, cleanings, and more.
  • Eyeglasses and contact lenses
  • Over-the-counter medications: Stock up on pain relievers, allergy medications, and other essentials.
  • Health procedures: Schedule those long-awaited appointments.

Consider a Health Savings Account (HSA) if you have a high-deductible health plan. An HSA can be a great way to save for future medical expenses. Unlike an FSA, HSA funds roll over from year to year and can be invested.

“At Stewart Memorial, we encourage all employees to take advantage of their FSA and HSA benefits,” says Lydia Larson, Director of Human Resources at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital. “As employees evaluate their options during the Open Enrollment period, we encourage them to look back on the health expenses they’ve had in the past year(s) as well as look ahead to what they anticipate for their family in the upcoming year and determine whether an FSA or HSA might be the right option for their family’s situation. Both options help to reduce taxable income. It’s important to us to educate our patients so they can become better consumers of healthcare.”

Here are some tips to maximize FSA benefits:

  • Check your balance: Log into your employee portal or contact your HR department to determine your remaining FSA balance.
  • Schedule appointments: Use your FSA funds to pay for doctor visits, prescriptions, and other eligible medical expenses.

By taking advantage of your Flex Spending Account, you can improve your financial health and well-being. Don’t let your hard-earned benefits go to waste!
