Stewart Memorial Community Hospital leaders participate in IHA Hospital Day on the Hill to advocate for Iowa's healthcare systems.

Des Moines, IA – On March 12, 2025, Stewart Memorial Community Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer Linn Block, Chief Nursing Officer Ann Lengeling, Chief Clinic Officer Melissa Wallace, and Stewart Memorial Board of Trustees member, Theresa Hildreth participated in the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA) Hospital Day on the Hill in Des Moines. The event brought together hospital leaders, trustees, and healthcare advocates from across Iowa to connect with legislators and advocate for policies that impact the healthcare system, and the patients served across the state.

The day began with a legislative briefing at the IHA Conference Center, where attendees received updates on key healthcare issues and priorities. Hospital leaders then traveled to the Iowa State Capitol to engage in one-on-one discussions with legislators, advocating for policies that support the continued growth and sustainability of Iowa’s hospitals and healthcare systems.

"IHA Hospital Day on the Hill provides a critical opportunity for healthcare professionals to engage directly with lawmakers," said Linn Block, CEO of Stewart Memorial Community Hospital. "As a rural healthcare provider, it is especially important for us to advocate for policies that ensure the sustainability of rural hospitals like Stewart Memorial. Our communities rely on access to high-quality, local care, and we must work to ensure that these services continue to be available in rural Iowa."

As part of the day’s activities, an advocacy workshop was held, educating participants on Iowa’s lawmaking process, effective messaging, and tips for engaging with legislators. This was followed by a luncheon at the Capitol, where attendees continued to discuss healthcare issues and form meaningful connections with lawmakers to advocate for the future of Iowa’s healthcare system.

"Iowa's healthcare needs are evolving, and it is our job to ensure that those needs are heard by our lawmakers," said Ann Lengeling, Chief Nursing Officer at Stewart Memorial. "Being present at the Capitol allows us to influence policies that ensure all Iowans have access to the care they deserve."

Melissa Wallace, Chief Clinic Officer, echoed the importance of such advocacy: "Our patients rely on us to ensure that the healthcare policies put in place support not only the infrastructure of our hospitals but also the well-being of those we care for every day. This event was an important step in building strong relationships with legislators that will benefit the healthcare system for years to come."

Stewart Memorial Community Hospital is proud to have participated in IHA Hospital Day on the Hill, joining other healthcare leaders in working to shape the future of healthcare in Iowa.
